Opening Weekend Option #11 - Lake Leake

Lake Leake has form! Rodney Knott with a winning tagged trout caught from Lake Leake in 2022

With 2 days to go until the brown trout season begins, the second to last water in our opening weekend options series is Lake Leake.

With milder weather due to relatively low elevation (571 m) and proximity to the east coast, Lake Leake is the ideal spot to open your season.

Currently 2 m under full supply level, don’t let the fact the lake is a bit low at the moment put you off. There is still plenty of scope to launch your dinghy at the main ramp. Brown and rainbow trout thrive in the lake, and towards the end of last season they were fat and strong.

Trolling and drift spinning will produce rewards for boat anglers, whilst there is still plenty of scope for spinning from the shore with shallow lures despite the low water levels. For the fly angler, the early season highlight is casting wet flies around areas of weed and drowned timber.

For more information about Lake Leake, check out the InFish App and the Lake Leake Anglers Access brochure. There is also a webcam present thanks to Anglers Alliance Tasmania, which is also accessible through the App.

A reminder to anglers that bait fishing is not allowed at Lake Leake, nor is fishing the inflowing streams including a radius of 50 m around where they enter the lake.

As part of our 2025-26 Tagged Trout promotion, there is one fish in the lake that is worth $5,000 to the lucky angler that manages to catch it.  Lake Leake is no stranger to tagged trout success with a tagged fish caught in 2022 and also in 2024.
