Native trees to shade spawning channels

Derwet Catchment Project and IFS staff worked to plant native trees.

Last year the team from the Derwent Catchment Project (DCP) collected seed from our field station at Liawenee and grew them to advanced seedlings at their Hamilton nursery.

Yesterday we worked with DCP to plant out over 300 seedlings around the rainbow trout spawning channels and the Liawenee Field Station. Snow and cider gum along with a lot of tea tree were the main species. As the trees grow they will provide shade and cover for the spawning trout and a wind break for the facilities at the field station.

The channels allow the rainbow trout to spawn away from the brown trout and their offspring provide a diverse wild fishery for anglers.
