Be Aware of Bird Flu

None

The recent detection of H5 avian influenza (bird flu) on mainland Australia is an important reminder of the need for preparedness and vigilance in Tasmania.

Two migratory seabirds in Western Australia and one migratory seabird in South Australia have been confirmed with H5 bird flu.

H5 bird flu has not been detected in Tasmania but the situation is being monitored closely.

We all have an important role in early detection in the event H5 bird flu arrives in Tasmania.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:

- AVOID contact.

- RECORD what you see - the type of animal, the number of animals, the location and take photos or video.

- REPORT by calling the Emergency Animal Disease hotline as soon as possible on 1800 675 888 or through the online reporting form on the NRE Tas website www.nre.tas.gov.au/BirdFlu

As a precaution you should avoid touching sick or dead birds or other animals.

The Tasmanian Avian Influenza Readiness and Response Plan sets out how Tasmania will respond to an outbreak of H5 bird flu and how you can prepare.

More information about H5 bird flu, including signs of disease and what to expect in an outbreak, is available at www.nre.tas.gov.au/BirdFlu
