Lake Burbury - Well Worth a Visit!
Two Inland Fisheries Officers recently conducted a boat patrol on Lake Burbury to support the recent fishing competition.
Over the three days of competition, a total of 355 trout were caught, with slightly more brown trout being caught than rainbow trout. Due to the high water levels brown trout were attracted into the shallower margins to forage over newly flooded ground. Anglers targeting this depth range were well rewarded.
The heaviest rainbow trout weighed 1.3 kg and the heaviest brown trout weighed 1.2 kg. Most fish landed ranged between 250 g and 700 g and all fish were in excellent condition.
Lake Burbury is one of the largest hydro lakes on the West Coast and is regarded as a really consistent angling destination. Located close to Queenstown, the lake is managed as a wild trout fishery and is open to anglers all year. Numerous spawning streams flow into the lake, ensuring strong natural recruitment and healthy trout populations.
Lake Burbury is primarily a boat-fishing lake, although periods of low water can expose shorelines suitable for land-based anglers.
With three $5,000 tagged fish available as part of the 2025-26 Tasmanian Tagged Trout Promotion, Lake Burbury would certainly be worth a visit this season!
