Huntsman Lake - Low Water Level

Huntsman Lake - Low Water Level

Fishing at Huntsman Lake is currently challenging due to the low water level, which is 15 m under full supply. This is due to low autumn rainfall in the catchment after the irrigation season finished on 31 March.

For the health of the Meander River a minimum daily flow of 207 ML/day is maintained at all times. Any inflows above this will contribute to the water level in the lake building again.

At the current level user discretion is required when launching and retrieving boats. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may possibly still be launched with care but use of larger boats is discouraged. Shoreline fishing is also challenging due to the muddy lake bed.

The lake will fill quickly when the winter rains arrive, but in the meantime we would advise anglers consider visiting one of the other year round waters.

Nearby options include Brushy Lagoon, Lake Barrington and Yingina/Great Lake.

Keep an eye on Huntsman Lake though, as water levels rise the fishing can be amazing as trout forage over freshly inundated ground. It is not uncommon to see large numbers of fish tailing as waters rise at this time of year which can be targeted by fly and bait anglers.

We will provide an update on our website when the water level rises enough for the boat ramp to be accessible again for boats.
