Opening Weekend Option #9 - Lower Derwent Lakes/Tyenna River

Often overlooked and underrated, the lower Derwent Lakes provide opening weekend option #9. All of Meadowbank Lake, Cluny Lagoon, Lake Repulse, Lake Catagunya and Wayatinah Lagoon are reached in just over one hours drive from Hobart. They are all under fished and provide great sport away from the large crowds that will likely be encountered at other more popular waters.
There are good options across the five waters for all forms of angling. There is plenty of scope for set rod fishing, with traditional baits including worms and grubs recommended. Lure anglers will catch fish using cobras, hard bodies, and soft plastics. A boat is advantageous but not essential. Every year larger than average fish are caught where the Hydro tailraces enter each lake. Wet flies will be the best choice for fly anglers, with the weedy shallows being the most likely spot to find fish. Wayatinah Lagoon and Meadowbank Lake provide the best options for this style of fishing.
For more information on the Lower Derwent Lakes check out the InFish App, and there is an Anglers Access brochure available for Meadowbank Lake.
The Tyenna River is regarded as one of the best river fisheries in the state and it will fish well so long as the flows aren’t too high. Lure anglers casting small lures will be rewarded, as will fly and bait anglers. There are numerous angler access sites available which are detailed in the Tyenna River brochure.
