Little Pine Lagoon - Signs of Recovery

Well-conditioned brown trout, Little Pine Lagoon

A recent electrofishing survey at Little Pine Lagoon conducted by the Inland Fisheries Service, confirms the fishery is in recovery mode and the outlook is encouraging for anglers.

While overall brown trout numbers remain relatively low, this is part of a natural rebuilding phase. Most fish captured during the recent survey were juveniles under 220 mm with low numbers of larger fish, with a few exceeding 500 mm. But the good news is; the presence of the smaller fish suggests recent recruitment has been encouraging, with plenty of young trout from recent spawning seasons ready to grow on.

Even better, fish condition is excellent, meaning these trout are healthy and primed for solid growth. Anglers are currently reporting some quality catches in the 1.0–1.8 kg range. While catch rates may stay lower in the short term, expect a steady improvement as the season progresses.
