Get ready for an unforgettable celebration of Tasmania’s iconic wild trout fishery as Trout Weekend returns to the Inland Fisheries Service (IFS) Liawenee Field Station on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026.
This year’s event moves to October to coincide with one of the most exciting times on the highland waters, the rainbow trout spawning run. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness this remarkable phenomenon while enjoying a weekend packed with fishing, education, entertainment, and community spirit.
Adding to the excitement, Trout Weekend will coincide with the popular Great Lake Tie-In, taking place on Saturday 10 October from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Great Lake Community Centre, Miena. Together, these events create a must-attend weekend for anglers, families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone with a passion for Tasmania’s unique highland environment.
Trout Weekend celebrates the spectacular spawning run of wild trout at Yingina/Great Lake, showcasing our wild trout fishery and highlighting the rich angling heritage that has made Tasmania famous among fishers for generations.
Visitors can explore a variety of displays and exhibits, meet local organisations and industry representatives, and chat with IFS staff about the important work being undertaken to manage and protect Tasmania’s freshwater fisheries. Topics will include fish stocking programs, angler access initiatives, fisheries research, and compliance operations. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the science, management, and conservation efforts that support Tasmania’s trout fishery.
Food and refreshments will be available throughout the weekend, making it the perfect outing for the whole family.
Mark your calendar now and join us at Liawenee this October for a weekend celebrating wild trout, fishing heritage, and the beauty of Tasmania’s Central Highlands.
