Clarifying Legal Possession and Use of Rods at Inland Waters

Please remember to get your inland angling licence if you are fishing at inland waters

The Inland Fisheries Service has fielded several queries lately about the rules surrounding the possession and use of rods at inland waters.

In summary:

  1. An inland angling licence (from the age of 14 and above) is needed to fish, or possess an assembled rod, at an inland water, unless fishing for indigenous fish in the waters listed in Schedule 1 of the Inland Fisheries Regulations 2019.
  2. If you have a current inland angling licence, you can possess more assembled rods than appear on your licence at an inland water, as long as you only use the number of rods you are licenced for at any given time.  This means anglers can prepare more rods than appear on their licence which are set up differently for specific needs and have them in their possession.
  3. For those anglers who have a two-rod licence, please note that fishing at lakes Mackenzie and Augusta is restricted to one handheld rod at a time.

Angling rules and regulations are available in the Tasmanian Inland Fishing Code or via the free Infish App.  When accessing the code please ensure you are referring to the version relevant to the current angling season.

Further details can be found in the Inland Fisheries Act 1995 and Inland Fisheries Regulations 2019.
