River Derwent trout study winner!

Max returned tags from the River Derwent study and won.

In July 2021 and July 2022, a total of 800 tagged wild adult brown trout were released into the River Derwent estuary near Dromedary. Each of the trout were single tagged with a four digit number. This was a study to investigate the movements, growth and population of brown trout in the River Derwent. It also let us know how easy stocked trout are to catch in the river.

Over the two years 54 tagged trout have been caught by 42 anglers. Anglers who contacted the IFS after capturing a tagged trout went into the draw to win a Shimano graphite fishing rod and reel combo. Last season, Max Newett was the lucky winner! Max managed to catch two tagged trout, both in late July from the Sorell Creek area.

Although there won’t be any more releases of tagged trout in the river, we are interested in any tagged trout that are caught.  These particular trout will either have a green or white tag.
