What a weekend!

Luke and Matthew Oates with their catch of nine

We have been busy over the weekend.  While we were out and about checking angling licenses we saw some great fishing. The Mersey River was firing, with water levels slightly higher than normal due to Friday nights rain. Many anglers did extremely well fishing with worms for bait. One fellow at Kimberly bagged six quality fish ranging from 0.5Kg to 1.5Kg in under 3 hours fishing time! Another angler at Shale Road bagged 4 fish in just 2 hours. All fish were in great condition, with really good flesh colouring.

Four Springs Lake was popular, with mixed success for anglers. Boats fished quite well, with trolling the most productive method. Fly and bait anglers also had success. Several quality fish in excess of 2Kg were inspected by our officers. Of note was the fishing morning enjoyed by brothers Luke and Matthew Oates. They had been trolling for 4.5 hours using cobra lures and had bagged 9 fish. Eight brown trout and one rainbow. The biggest fish they had was a brown trout of around 1.7Kg. They said that the secret was making sure the lures were swimming near the bottom of the lake.  Luke and Matthew believe this is where the fish are currently feeding.

With such great fishing at the moment, why not get an angling licence and try your luck? This season is shaping up as a fantastic one.  There are so many great waters around the state to fish. You never know when that once in a lifetime whopper will end up on the end of your line!
