Lake Pedder remains redfin perch free

One of the brown trout electrofished from the Hermit basin area

After a recent reported sighting, in late April Inland Fisheries staff investigated the presence of redfin perch (Perca fluviatilis) in Lake Pedder.  Two main sites were surveyed; the western shore from the Lake Pedder Wilderness Lodge boat ramp and the Hermit basin from McPartlan’s Pass boat ramp. Using the electroboat a range of habitats were shocked including shallow and steep rocky banks, large patches of baumea grass, strap weed, submerged weed beds, as well as heavily snagged areas with sunken and fallen timber. The depths surveyed ranged from 0.3m to 5m, with an average water temperature of around 13.6oC. After focused electrofishing of these areas for over 4 ½ hours no signs of any redfin perch were found. Instead, numerous quality brown trout were captured ranging in size from 130 to 400mm, as well as climbing galaxias (Galaxias brevipinnis).

Remember the Lake Pedder is open all year and with the quality of the trout that were seen in the recent survey will provide some good angling opportunities.

If you do think you see a sighting of a redfin perch or any other introduced fish species where they should not be in please contact the IFS as soon as possible on 1300 INFISH or email Infish@ifs.tas.gov.au.
