Rainbow stocking at Dee Lagoon

Dee Lagoon received 5,000 rainbow yearling (with an average weight of 115 g) in two separate stockings on Wednesday 10 November and Friday 12 November. These young fish were grown at the Service’s New Norfolk hatchery from eggs harvested last year from wild rainbow trout resident in Great Lake. Although Dee Lagoon has a self-sustaining population of wild rainbow trout, the fishery requires supplementary stocking to maintain its high value as a wild rainbow still water fishery.

Brushy Lagoon was stocked last Thursday 11 November with surplus fish from the Australian Maritime College that were reared as part of student coursework. A total of 1,295 brook trout were released, of which 1,115 weighed approximately 130 g, 100 weighed 90 g and 80 were about 1.2 kg. In addition, 180 brook trout (hybrid cross between brown and brook trout) at approximately 120 g were also released. These stockings are in alignment with the Service’s management of Brushy Lagoon which is a family fishery, situated close to major population centres. It is ideal as a ‘put and take’ fishery, providing a diversity of salmonid species including brown, rainbow and brook trout as well as trophy sized Atlantic salmon.

Lake Barrington was stocked on Monday 8 November with around 1400 domestic rainbow trout weighing about 100 g, which were donated by Springfield Hatcheries at Bridport.
