Special Event and Junior Water Stockings
An increasing number of angling clubs are encouraging young people to get into trout fishing. Some run regular events for junior members and have a dedicated junior angling water. The Service is keen to support these programs and whenever possible, stocks the designated waters with easy to catch good size fish.
Junior anglers get a boost with big fish stocking
In the past week, the Service stocked four junior waters in the North West with big Atlantic salmon weighing about 2.5 kg which had been donated by Petuna Aquacultue. These were in preparation for promotional events, three of which were run on the following Sunday 14 November. The details of these stockings and subsequent promotional events, along with the contacts for the junior programs, are outlined below.
Frombergs Dam, near Ulverstone received 117 Atlantic salmon on Thursday 11 November. This was for the well established and successful North West Coast organization, Young Anglers Development Inc which hosts a junior event at Frombergs every last Sunday in the month from 10 am to 3 pm. Taylors Dam, between Latrobe and Devonport, received 130 Atlantic salmon for the Devonport Anglers Club junior angling program. The club hosts a junior angling day every second Sunday in the month and also provides a fishing venue for local school groups upon request. Despite the rain and wet conditions last Sunday, over 40 children turned up and every one caught a fish – mostly a recently stocked trophy size salmon. The contact is Peter Maloney on 0419 871131.
Robertsons Dam, Yolla received 126 Atlantic salmon in preparation for the Wynyard Angling Club’s Annual Fisheries Development Day which was held on Sunday 14 November. Over 100 people turned up, mostly kids and their families, and most of the salmon were caught that day despite the miserable weather. The contact is Colin Peck on 6442 3880 or 0427 423880.
Deloraine Anglers Club organized a junior angling day also on Sunday 14 November at a farm dam on the Glen Murrough property, which the Service stocked with 130 Atlantic salmon. All children caught a fish that day and the club is now planning for a future event on Sunday 23 January. The contact is John Early on 0408 137125.
