Hydro Tasmania, Inland Fisheries Service and Anglers Alliance Tasmania are pleased to inform anglers that the Penstock Lagoon Recreation Plan has been successfully implemented.

The works undertaken were designed to improve recreational access and facilities at the lagoon and surrounding areas whilst ensuring the sustainable management for the benefit of future generations.

Site works included defining areas for camping at the boat ramp and 'Ladies Walk'. Braided tracks that have eroded and increased sediment load into the lagoon have been closed off to vehicular traffic. Formalised tracks have been improved and resurfaced. The boat ramp access and the boat ramp itself have been improved with increased parking and turning areas. Navigation markers have been placed in the channel to assist boaters. The 5 knot speed limit has been reinforced and Beginners Bay has been designated as a ‘no motorised boats’ area to reduce damage to weed beds and subsequent increases in turbidity. The canal boat ramp will remain closed due to environmental concerns. Boating activity will be monitored in the future to determine if boating is having a detrimental effect on water quality and fishing.

New signage has been installed at main entry points, parking and day use areas. Interpretative signs have been installed that provide visitors with an overview of the history of the lagoon, camping, fishery management, angling notes, regulations and a code of conduct. Regulatory signs have been installed at Pulfords Bridge to remind anglers that the canals are closed to fishing and that it is an offence to disturb spawning fish.

The signs also include a detailed map of the lagoon, which identifies the access points, and the 10metre foot access easement that extends around the Eastern Shore from Pulfords Bridge to the Saplings Shore.

A brochure has been produced incorporating information on all of the above and the map. The brochure will be available from the Service, angling licence agents and the IFS website. Access Brochure and maps
