The Service stocked 2,500 rainbow trout yearlings weighing around 100 g into the Meander River on Wednesday 27 October. These offspring from wild Great Lake rainbow trout were released in four locations in an extended stretch of the river below the Meander Dam.
The stocking was undertaken as a trial to assess the potential of the Meander River as a rainbow trout fishery in addition to its resident brown trout population. It is well known that brown trout tend to remain in the pools and avoid sections of faster flow (riffles) which are preferred by rainbow trout. The Meander River has a good number of riffle sections and ideal habitat for rainbow trout, with guaranteed water flows.
The young fish travelled well from New Norfolk and were extremely vigorous when released, dispersing quickly in their new environment. They were released into sections of the river containing ideal rainbow trout habitat so as to encourage them to stay put.
