IFS cleaning up rubbish at inland waters

Inland Fisheries Service participated in ‘Business Clean Up Australia Day’ on Tuesday 2 March with four teams picking up rubbish at a range of popular fishing waters.

The results from the Bradys chain, Bronte Lagoon and Woods Lake were very encouraging with a lot less litter in comparison to last year. This may indicate that the message to ‘take away what you bring’ is getting through to anglers.

The results were not so pleasing in the Lower Derwent lakes, where the day camping areas were full of rubbish. The Broad River area was particularly bad with the bushes littered with human waste, disposable nappies and plenty of platic, paper, bottles and cans. Service staff did a fabulous job cleaning up the mess taking several loads to the tip.

Hopefully, this effort by Service staff sets a good example for others and will help encourage everyone to enjoy and care for Tasmania’s natural environment.
