Environmental Vandalism at Lake Binney

The destruction of sensitive marshland habitat on the shores of Lake Binney last weekend by campers driving 4WD vehicles could result in long term impacts to the fishery in more ways than one!

Environmental Vandalism at Lake Binney

Fine trout habitat gone from the lake margin when next it floods

The Inland Fisheries received a report of the destruction of sensitive marshland habitat on the shores of Lake Binney last weekend by campers driving 4WD vehicles.

As a result of this eco-vandalism, it will take many years for the tyre grooves to flatten out and for wetland plant species to recolonise the muddy ground. This ideal trout habitat will be severely disturbed when next the lake levels rise, reducing the quality of the flooded margins for foraging trout.

It is sad that the behaviour of a few irresponsible people can have such a far reaching affect not just on the fishery but on the image of anglers by the community. This is particularly important at a time when the Service is negotiating with landholders throughout the State for increased access to fishing locations.

A message to the culprits - don’t take our world class fishery for granted just because you can - and to all other respectful and responsible anglers, please report illegal activities such as this immediately to the Service or Bushwatch on 1800 333 000.
