The Whitebait season opened last Friday 1 October for six weeks, closing on Thursday 11 November. Early reports from the North West indicate that the runs are patchy and the fishing is slow. However Inland Fisheries Inspectors interviewed around 60 whitebaiters over two days and most were happy with the fishing despite the low catch rates. As the weather warms up, the fishing is likely to improve significantly and with five weeks of the season still remaining, this is a good time to buy a licence, prepare your whitebait net and get into the action.

Rules for Anglers’ Access in Tasmania by Sarah Graham — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
What are your rights as an angler to access water on private property? The answer may vary depending on the landholder and the complexities of land tenure, particularly along rivers. There is the traditional view that water and fish are public property which may conflict with the historic strength of trespassing laws in the State. The general principle promoted by the Service is that ‘access is a privilege not a right’. You should always have permission from the landholder and when in doubt, you should always ask first! The following information provides some background on why this principle is a good idea and the general rules regarding angler access.

Last spring’s carp spawning event and subsequent recruitment of thousands of juvenile fish in Lake Sorell marked the first real set-back for the Inland Fisheries Service carp team since the program began in 1995. Prior to this season, the Service had made excellent progress towards complete eradication of the pest fish with the removal of over 10,000 carp from both lakes, annihilating the population in Lake Crescent and leaving less than 50 adult carp in Lake Sorell. Ideal conditions this season resulted in the inevitable - carp spawning and successful recruitment - despite the precautions taken by the Service. The battle is now on but the carp team has expeience, strategy and innnovation on its side and the Service remains determined to win the war against carp.

Carp Activity - Warming Up for Summer by Sarah Graham — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
The total number of carp captured since the carp program began in 1995 is 2,798 from Lake Sorell and 7,797 from Lake Crescent. Apart from the general fish down of carp in both lakes, a key method to eradicate carp has been the use of male carp to monitor population behaviour through radio tracking. Male fish are surgically implanted with a battery powered radio transmitter, with a two year battery life, and the fish are released back into the lake for the Inland Fisheries Service to monitor through regular radio tracking. As expected, the wet season and high lake levels have provided ideal conditions for the carp to begin their spawning activity. The male carp that were fitted with transmitters during Winter have been very active over the past six weeks requiring intensive monitoring by the Service. The carp program entered its daily monitoring phase at both lakes from the start of October and intensive fishing has been ongoing during this period. Some interesting events have occurred at Lake Crescent indicating good results for the program, and fish continue to be captured at Lake Sorell.

The annual whitebait fishing season starts on Thursday 1 October and runs for six weeks to 11 November in selected rivers around the State. High water flows this year due to winter rains and spring floods are likely to hold back and disperse the whitebait runs early in the season but as the season continues, whitebaiters should have access to good numbers of fish. If you want to go whitebaiting, you must be over 10 years old, hold a 2009 Whitebait licence and abide by whitebait fishing regulations, which govern the catch and possession limits, and the method of fishing, as well as the season, time and waters open for whitebait fishing.

For many years, the area was leased by the Parks and Wildlife Service under an agreement between Gunns, Central Highlands Council and the State Government but this lease agreement expired last year and there was a question around what would happen to the toilet block and public campsite.
Stocking in response to recent rains by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
In response to the recent increase in water levels the IFS has had the opportunity to reinvigorate a number of fisheries that have suffered as a result of the drought over the past two seasons. Lake Leake, Tooms Lake, Craigbourne Dam and Pawleena Lagoon have all benefited from the recent rains as water levels at these storages have risen considerably. This is particularly good news for Southern anglers who have missed out on nearby fisheries such as Craigbourne Dam and Pawleena Lagoon, the former being a regular haunt for Hobart based anglers over the winter and traditionally closed season months. The rise in water levels has been followed by the re-establishment of trout stocks at some of the fisheries - see full story for details
Rise in water level at Arthurs Lake good news for boat launching by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Due to the rise in water levels at Arthurs Lake (Currently 4.4 metres below FSL as at 14 July 2009) the low level launching area at Pumphouse Bay is no longer required. IFS staff have removed the navigation buoys deployed in the flume canal as they are no longer required. Boats can now be launched at the existing launching area that was used prior to the placement of the low level one. The Dam Wall ramp is also now fully serviceable. Boating anglers should take care to avoid navigation hazards and observe the 5 knot speed limit advisory until the water level stabilises.

Another successful Trout Weekend by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
What a success, 4 000 people, car park full and 150 cars in the overflow car park. As a consequence of the huge attendance the local police officer spent three hours on the Lake Highway directing traffic on the Saturday and one and a half hours on Sunday. The weather was cold and misty but most the people had come prepared dressed in warm clothing, although a few people were spotted wearing t-shirts. Exhibitors included MAST, Hydro Tasmania, Quarantine Tasmania, the Cancer Council, tackle stores, outdoor equipment stores, Cressy Trout Expo, Anglers Alliance Tasmania and the Fox Task Force. The Bothwell District School had over 60 paintings on display produced by the local children. There were demonstrations of fly tying and fly-casting that proved popular as well. Angling Clubs were there with food stalls and a long list of other supporters helped make this years’ Inland Fisheries Service Trout Weekend a huge success. The children’s fishing lagoon run by Fishcare volunteers, the wild brown trout stripping and the busses to the bottom fish trap were extremely popular. Most kids took home a fat rainbow trout and many adults witnessed the business end of the IFS at the fish trap. Unfortunately the helicopter which normally operates during the Trout Weekend was unable to attend due to low cloud. In summing up it was an extremely successful weekend and the IFS thanks all involved.
Huon River - Anglers Access Project by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Anglers Alliance Tasmania and Inland Fisheries Service have made significant progress towards the completion of the Anglers Access project on the Huon River. Anglers that fish the Huon know that it is typified by steep, heavily vegetated banks with shore access difficult, if not impossible in many areas. The IFS/AAT project has focussed on developing and identifying access to locations where there is scope for shore based angling or wading as well as highlighting launching ramps for boat based anglers. These locations will be identified on the access brochure that will be available in both printed copy and via the IFS website. With the cooperation of private landowners, Huon Valley Council and Forestry Tasmania many new access locations will be available to anglers in the coming season including: click "read more" for full details

Algal bloom concerns at Penstock Lagoon by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Concerns about a potential algal bloom at Penstock Lagoon are being investigated after Inland Fisheries Service was alerted to thick brown filamentous algae being observed at the lagoon. Samples of the algae have been analysed by Analytical Services Tasmania and preliminary results indicate the presence of Anabaena, a blue-green algae. To confirm the nature and extent of the bloom, Hydro Tasmania has initiated a monitoring program and will collect further samples this week. The public will be informed of the status of the bloom as soon as the results are known. Anglers and other users should avoid contact with the water until further notice. Queries should be directed to Helen Brain at Hydro Tasmania on 6230 5746.
Risdon Brook Dam fishing closure by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Due to the very low water level at Risdon Brook Dam it is currently not feasible to fish from the platforms set up for anglers with a disability. As this is a public domestic water supply anglers should note that the platforms are the only place angling is permitted. As a consequence of the low water levels no fishing is permitted at Risdon Brook Dam until further notice. Southern Tasmania now has four other venues where anglers with a disability can safely fish. These are the Plenty River at the Salmon Ponds, the River Derwent at Windsor Corner north of New Norfolk, the River Derwent at the Esplanade at New Norfolk and the River Derwent at Bridgewater at Riverside Drive just off the Boyer Road.

The new boat ramp and carpark facilities at Lake Catagunyah have been completed. Jointly funded by MAST and Hydro the work has been undertaken whilst the lake has been drawn down for power station maintenance. The access road, carpark and boatramp have been significantly upgraded at a combined cost of approximatly $30,000. This is a result of MAST, IFS and Hydro and strategy to improve facilities at waters with reliable water levels.
Arthurs Lake Dam boat ramp - caution by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Boat users on Arthurs Lake should note that the current water level is at the end of the Arthurs Dam boat ramp. There is a significant drop off after the ramp, only 4WD vehicles should use this ramp until further notification. The ramp at Pumphouse Point is fine for 2WD vehicles. Due to the low water levels anglers are reminded to exercise caution at all times when navigating the lake as there are submerged hazards that are just approaching the surface.
Sign vandalism costs IFS time and money by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Over the past year the IFS and AAT have invested many hours and dollars into improving information and interpretation for anglers through the installation of signs at popular waters and publishing Anglers Access Brochures. These projects could not have been completed without the financial support of the Australian Government. However the removal or damage to signs is of particular concern as the IFS are responsible for maintaining them. Signs have recently been removed from Great Lake (Tods Corner) and Lake Echo (Large Bay). The cost of replacing a single sign including the time to reinstall it is approximately $500.00. This is money that the IFS would rather spend on improving facilities for anglers, restocking popular waters and other fisheries management that benefits ALL anglers. Anglers are reminded that it is an offence to remove, damage or deface any sign and that the penalty includes a fine up to $1200 or 12 months imprisonment. We urge all anglers to report damage to signs to the IFS.
Broad River campground cleanup by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
In response to reports of accumulated rubbish at this popular boat launching and camping area on the western side of Cluny Lagoon the IFS and Central Highlands Council conducted a cleanup of the area. Much of the rubbish had accumulated over a number of years and was contributing to making this once beautiful lakeside area into something resembling a rubbish dump. The council and IFS staff removed approximately two tonnes of domestic and associated waste from the area. It is hoped that future visitors will respect the effort that has gone into cleaning up this popular spot and help to maintain it by taking there rubbish home with them. Campers should be aware there are no toilet facilities and they should take a chemical or portable toilet. Anglers are reminded that at all fisheries they should take thier rubbish with them when they leave.

To fish these areas that are out of bounds for able bodied licenced anglers you will need a Tasmanian Transport Access Scheme permit and a current angling licence.
Arthurs Lake access during low water levels and missing Pumphouse Bay navigation aids. by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
Due to low water levels IFS, MAST and Hydro have invested approximately $10,000 in providing a low level launching area at Pumphouse Bay. Part of this project was to define a navigation channel from the launching area into the main lake due to submerged rocks and shallow water on either side of the channel that could lead to damage to motors ad props. One of the red navigation buoys has either come adrift from its mooring or been removed. If the buoy is found please advise the IFS on 1300463474. These buoys have been installed for the benefit of all anglers- if you notice anyone tampering with them report it to IFS or MAST. see full story for details of access to Arthurs by boat during low waters levels
Lake Echo access by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
The Inland Fisheries Service, in conjunction with Hydro Tasmania and MAST has recently completed an upgrade of access and boating facilities at Lake Echo. A new 3.5km gravel access road and concrete boat ramp has been completed at Large Bay. This ramp is located at the North Western end of the lake providing access to water sheltered from the prevailing winds and opens up the entire northern end of the lake. Anglers should take care during periods of low water levels as the new ramp is over 60m long and steep grade-4wd is recommended. The gravel ramp at Middle Echo has been extended and re-gravelled. The ramp at the Dam Wall has been extended and re-gravelled. New directional signage has been installed to direct anglers to these three boat ramps. Preferred access points are from Dee Lagoon in the South and Bronte Lagoon to the West (see map below).

Liawenee Trout Weekend a success by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
The popularity of the Inland Fisheries Trout Weekend was proven beyond a doubt this year. An estimated 4000 people came to the Liawenee field base over the two-day event and gave some very positive feedback about the event to the Service through a survey questionnaire. Definitely the main drawcard of the Weekend is the icon of our inland fishery – the wild Tasmanian brown trout – and the sheer number of these big fish spawning in the Liawenee Canal. Visitors and locals marvelled at the close up view. The Service demonstrated the fish trapping and stripping procedure, and the collecting of eggs for on-growing at the hatchery in New Norfolk and the Salmon Ponds.

New survey indicates elevated Mercury levels in Derwent estuary bream and trout by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
The Director of Public Health, Dr Roscoe Taylor, has advised people to avoid eating bream caught in the Derwent estuary and to limit consumption of other Derwent fin fish species. Dr Taylor said his advice was a precautionary measure based on the preliminary results from a pilot survey of fish caught in the estuary which found mercury levels in bream, and sea-run brown trout, are in excess of recommended food safety standards. Bream and sea run trout were targeted in the pilot survey because, as the condition of the Derwent has improved, these recreational fisheries are becoming increasingly popular.

Time to keep an eye on lake levels by Tim Farrell — last modified 15:43 30-06-2011
With water levels at many of the State’s prime fishing waters at or close to historical lows, it is important that anglers think carefully about boating. Lake levels at Hydro storages can be seen by going to this URL http://www.hydro.com.au/home/Tourism+and+Recreation/Lake+Levels.htm It is important to check the level of waters that you intend to fish for the sake of safety as well as for the prospect of fishing success. The current level of Great Lake means that majority of boat ramps will soon be unserviceable leaving Boundary Bay the as the only safe location for the launch and retrieve of all but the smallest of boats. When the level drops below 17 m FSL only the Boundary Bay ramp is useable. With low water levels there is an increasing likelihood that previously submerged hazards will now be exposed or close to the water surface. Anglers should exercise caution if they are unfamiliar with waters at the current low levels.
