Huon River - Anglers Access Project

by Tim Farrell last modified 02:33 04-06-2009

Anglers Alliance Tasmania and Inland Fisheries Service have made significant progress towards the completion of the Anglers Access project on the Huon River. Anglers that fish the Huon know that it is typified by steep, heavily vegetated banks with shore access difficult, if not impossible in many areas. The IFS/AAT project has focussed on developing and identifying access to locations where there is scope for shore based angling or wading as well as highlighting launching ramps for boat based anglers. These locations will be identified on the access brochure that will be available in both printed copy and via the IFS website. With the cooperation of private landowners, Huon Valley Council and Forestry Tasmania many new access locations will be available to anglers in the coming season including: click "read more" for full details

With the cooperation of private landowners, Huon Valley Council and Forestry Tasmania many new access locations will be available to anglers in the coming season including:
•    One km upstream from the Huonville Bridge on the Glen Huon Rd. There is parking on the riverside. Foot access has been developed both up and downstream from here through the installation of stiles and signage.
•    At Calverts Park, upstream from the Judbury Bridge to the mouth of Judd’s Creek. Should be a hotspot both early and late in the season.
•    Downstream from Calverts Park for approx one km – the best spot is at the end of the paddocks where an extensive rock shelf extends into the river and provides an excellent casting platform. This location is also accessible from a stile on the North Huon Rd.
•    Downstream from the Judbury Bridge on the Glen Huon side. Park on the upstream side of the bridge, walk under the bridge and follow the access signs. The best locations are approx 500 m downstream.
•    Two km towards Glen Huon from Judbury (Opposite Cane Rd) there is a stile and access signs leading down to the river. This is a deep backwater ideal for lure casting and soft plastics. Anglers can walk from here all the way to the Judbury Bridge meeting up with the location above.
•    The new bridge over the Huon River at Southwood is an excellent location to access the middle reaches of the river.
•    Through the cooperation of Forestry Tasmania road access is now available to the commencement of the Huon Track (Upstream from Tahune). This walk provides access to the upper reaches of the Huon – truly a wilderness fishery experience.
Negotiations continue to further improve access to the Huon River – updates will be provided on the IFS website as they occur.
