The use of an experienced and accredited guide can make the difference between success and failure for the visiting or novice angler. Tasmania offers a full range of professional guiding services including one day fly fishing lessons for beginners through to fully guided expeditions. All guides operating in Tasmania are required to meet certified and audited accreditation standards, including the Tourism Council of Tasmania endorsement. Trout Guides and Lodges Tasmania Inc (TGALT) is the trout guiding body whose members hold these endorsements and provide a quality service and a wealth of local knowledge. Licence Agents
You can buy an angling licence at most fishing tackle stores, some trout guides and Service Tasmania stores there are about 120 licence selling agents for the Service around the State.
Angling clubs
Tasmania has an extensive system of community-based Angling Groups. Some of these cater for all angling methods whilst others are specifically for fly fishing. Several run programs for young anglers and novice fishers are always welcome as new members.
Caution - Be Aware
Many of Tasmania's renowned fishing waters are situated in the highland country and other remote locations. These areas are subject to changeable weather conditions and anglers are reminded to Check the weather and to take adequate precautions when setting off on fishing trips in these locations.
Special Fisheries
Tasmania has public waters reserved for exclusive use by disabled persons and for the tuition of young people. Private fisheries are also available for use by anglers besides the extensive public waters system, where licences are not required.
Visitors and Returning Anglers
Visiting anglers and locals returning to the State, are requested to clean equipment thoroughly before bringing it to Tasmania and to note other prohibited activities. Mainland States contain various aquatic diseases that are not present in Tasmania and could cause serious damage to the fishery. Bait, including all fish, yabbies, mudeyes and frogs cannot be brought into Tasmania and remain prohibited imports.
