Young Anglers

by sare — last modified 12:10 25-07-2006

A number of community angling clubs organise programs for young anglers. Several waters are designated as juvenile waters only.

Young Anglers Programs

A number of Angling Clubs run informal programs for young anglers. Individual tackle stores, the Australian Fishing Tackle Association and the Service are keen to promote trout fishing to young people and will support club activities.

The Young Anglers Development Inc, which operates out of Ulverstone, provides a formal education program for young people interested in fishing. It provides them with a safe and secure fishing venue, and expert advice on all forms of angling. Events are held on the last Sunday of every month from August to April, excluding December, from 10 am to 3 pm at Frombergs Dam, East Ulverstone. For further information, contact Young Anglers Development President, Michael McMullen on (03) 6425 5843.

Juvenile Waters

Young people under the age of 14 are not required to buy an Angling licence to fish at any inland water during the open season. However, those between 14 and 17 are requred to buy a Juvenile licence.  Coffee Creek in the South and Lake Waverley in the North of the State are designated as Juvenile Angling Waters. These are reserved for junior anglers only, provided the child is accompanied by an adult.

Education

Although not a formal program, Inland Fisheries inspectors, visit schools to talk to young people about trout fishing as well as a range of subjects relating to freshwater fisheries. Teaching resources and give-away materials are available by contacting the Service.
