Things to do to help protect native fish populations in Tasmania

How You Can Help

Some things that you can do to help protect Tasmania’s native fish populations are:

  • Learn more about Tasmanian native fish, their diversity and uniqueness. Suggested reading includes Fulton, W. 1990, Tasmanian Freshwater Fishes, Fauna of Tasmania handbook number 7, University of Tasmania; McDowall, R. (editor) 1996, Freshwater Fishes of South-eastern Australia.
  • DO NOT MOVE any species of fish or other aquatic animal or plant between streams or lakes, including different parts of the same stream.
  • If you become aware of trout, redfin or other introduced species in a new area, let the Service know. These species can have a devastating effect on native fish populations.
  • Protect native fish habitat by looking after and not disturbing freshwater and bankside environments. Draining swamps, de-snagging, channelling, damming streams, clearing vegetation, water pollution, water extraction etc all impact on aquatic animals.
