Fishery Management
The Service has jurisdiction over all inland waters, which include lakes, rivers, farm dams, registered private fisheries, ponds and aquaria. Key areas of management are based in Recreational Fisheries, Native Fish, Commercial Fisheries and Pest Fish. Other key activities relate to Environmental Projects, Compliance and Biological Consultancy.

Of these, a major focus is in Recreational Fisheries Management on the maintenance and development of Tasmania’s world-renowned trout fishery, and the protection of its relative disease free status. The State’s legendary ‘wild trout fishery’ is a legacy of the introduction of brown trout (Salmo trutta) over 150 years ago. The fishery consistently attracts anglers from interstate and overseas, and caters for well over 20,000 Tasmanian anglers annually. The Service generates its revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences.
