Fact Sheet for Craigbourne Dam

Craigbourne Dam
Craigbourne Dam

Introduction:

Craigbourne Dam is situated in the Coal River Valley about 50 minutes from Hobart. The dam is primarily an irrigation storage but is an important and popular fishery because of its proximity to Hobart. Access is limited around the shore because of private land tenure of some of the shoreline. A boat ramp near the dam is available for those wanting to fish from a boat.

Fishing Information:

The Service stocks the fishery heavily with rainbow trout, brook trout, Atlantic salmon and supplements the fishery with special stockings of adult brown trout from time to time. Regular stockings of large and trophy Atlantic salmon are a feature of our management of the fishery and the wish to provide great fishing opportunities close to large population centres. Some of the larger Atlantic salmon caught have weighed between 6-10 kg. The average size of brown trout is about 2 kg and rainbow trout can be caught weighing up to 1 kg. Brook trout are often caught after stocking and weigh about ½ kg

Fisheries Management Information:

The water is subjected to periodic annual algal blooms that can result in the closure of the lake for human health reasons. Generally, announcements are made about closures in the public notices of the regional papers and on notice boards at the lake. Please take heed of these notices and avoid contact with the water and do not

Region:

South

Other Fish:

Short finned eels (Anguilla australis), redfin perch (Perca fluviatilis) and tench (Tinca tinca) have populations in this water.

Fishing Tips:

Atlantic salmon are often caught on largish white, red and pink bibbed minnow lures, or if using a fly, then a white streamer pattern is recommended. A Tassie Devil is popular when trolling for brown trout and rainbow trout. Wattle grubs and worms are used when bait fishing and this is a good method when fishing with small children. Small lures fished near the bottom of the lake often are successful when fishing for brook trout.

Facilities:

A boat ramp and toilet block are situated near the dam.

How To Get There:

Travel to Richmond and then take the Colebrook Road north towards Campania/Colebrook Richmond. The lake is on the right 4 kms before Colebrook.
