Astacopsis gouldi is listed as 'vulnerable' on both the State and Commonwealth threatened species legislation due to population declines and ongoing threats. As of January 1998 it was declared a protected fish under the Inland Fisheries Act 1995 and fishing banned. A. tricornis and A. franklinii are not considered threatened, but to minimise risk of decline, fishing is no longer allowed for any of the Astacopsis species.
