An IFS Recreational Angling licence is needed to take redfin perch from inland waters. Licences can be purchased from more than 130 agents located in retail businesses around the state. Licensing agents are primarily fishing stores but also include most trout guides, Service Tasmania outlets and the IFS head office

Distingushing Features:

A deep bodied fish that has two distinct dorsal fins and a lateral line. The scales are large and thick and they feel rough to touch. They have about 6 prominent vertical dark bars on their side, although these become less obvious in larger fish.

Size:

Can reach 450 mm in length and 2 kg in Tasmanian waters, but typically rarely attains greater than 200 mm in length

General:

Introduced into Tasmania in 1861 from Europe. They are not generally favoured by Tasmanian anglers due to their small size, although they have good fighting and eating qualities. The Inland Fisheries Service views redfin perch as an introduced pest fish. This is due to its ability to out compete native fish, and in some cases seriously reduce or even eradicate populations, it has also been shown to prey on juvenile trout. Many populations around the state are dominated by stunted mature fish

Locally abundant in eastern, central and southern Tasmania
